Gerhardstein reflects on his late mother’s strong opinions on abortion in Cincinnati Enquirer op-ed.

When I first told her I was representing abortion providers, she enthusiastically supported me. Before Roe v. Wade legalized abortion, she had treated numerous women in serious life-threatening circumstances resulting from attempted illegal abortions.

The Catholic Church is one of the most vocal opponents of legal abortion, and Ohio churches are upping their rhetoric ahead of the election and impending vote on Issue 1. However, not all Catholics share this view. In a thoughtful commentary published in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Al Gerhardstein shows the other side of the coin as he reflects on his late mother’s opinion on abortion rights.

As a devout Catholic with many years of experience as a labor and delivery nurse, Gerhardstein’s mother knew decisions about pregnancy were personal and difficult—and she trusted women to make them.

Gerhardstein also discusses the current Ohio laws surrounding reproductive rights, and how the proposed amendment will permanently alter Ohio’s Constitution to keep these decisions in the hands of women and their families.
